James Balen – Shareholder | Practice Group Leader – Probate & Guardianship
James Balen is a partner at Pyke Balen & Moncure, P.C. and serves as Practice Group Leader for the firm’s Probate and Guardianship practice. He has dedicated his entire legal career to probate-related matters, bringing deep procedural knowledge and steady guidance to families navigating court-supervised estate issues.
Originally from Windsor, Ontario, James earned his law degree from the University of North Texas at Dallas College of Law. While in law school, he gained extensive, hands-on experience as a judicial clerk for the Honorable Ingrid M. Warren in Dallas Probate Court No. 2. That early exposure to the inner workings of the probate court shaped his understanding of how judges evaluate cases, resolve disputes, and protect vulnerable individuals.
Since then, James has handled and supervised hundreds of probate, heirship, and guardianship matters, ranging from routine administrations to highly contested proceedings. He is also a Certified Guardian and Attorney Ad Litem in the State of Texas, allowing him to serve in court-appointed roles where neutrality, diligence, and client protection are paramount.
Before entering the legal profession, James worked as a licensed mortgage broker in Texas beginning in 2006, giving him a strong foundation in financial documentation, asset structures, and transactional detail.
James is known for building strong, long-term client relationships and for his commitment to finding practical, legally sound solutions during emotionally difficult circumstances. Outside of the office, he enjoys spending time with family and friends, golfing, and traveling.
